Winter here is hard on houses. This is the walkthrough we recommend every Capital Region homeowner do once the snow clears.

Outside, at ground level

Check that grading slopes away from the foundation. Extend downspouts at least four feet. Look for cracked or spalled masonry at the foundation and steps, and check the hose bibs for split pipes from winter.

Looking up

Scan the roof from the ground with binoculars for lifted, missing, or curled shingles. Check that gutters are clear and pitched. Look for stained soffits, which indicate a leak.

The deck

Probe boards and joists with a screwdriver. Push hard on railings. Check for movement or heave at the footings. Look at the ledger connection to the house.

Inside

Check the attic for daylight, damp insulation, or mold. Look under every sink for slow leaks. Test the sump pump by pouring water into the pit. Replace furnace filters.

Frequently asked questions

How often should gutters be cleaned here?
Twice a year minimum — late spring and again after leaf drop.
What's the most commonly missed item?
The sump pump. Test it before the spring melt, not during it.
