Call immediately
Water you can't shut off. Sewage backing up into the house. No heat when it's below freezing. A gas smell — in that case leave the house and call the utility first. Water anywhere near electrical panels or outlets.
Can usually wait until morning
A single slow drain, a running toilet, a dripping faucet, or low pressure at one fixture. Shut off the fixture's supply valve and get some sleep.
Reduce the damage while you wait
Know your main shutoff location. Keep a bucket and towels near the water heater. Photograph any damage before cleanup for insurance.
